Buyer Red Flags in International Trade
Learn buyer red flags suppliers and brokers should investigate, including vague demand, false urgency, authority questions and unusual document requests.
Suppliers and brokers also need due diligence. A large RFQ can look attractive while still lacking a real buying organization, approved demand or commercial authority.
Vague high-volume requirements
Very large quantities with no clear specification, destination, schedule or evaluation process should be qualified before a supplier invests significant time or shares sensitive information.
Unclear authority
Ask who the contracting buyer is and whether the contact is an employee, agent, distributor or mandate. If authority is claimed, request reasonable supporting evidence.
Requests for sensitive documents too early
Protect passports, bank records, proprietary certificates and confidential supplier information. Share only what is necessary for the stage of the transaction and use appropriate redaction or confidentiality controls.
Unusual fees or preconditions
Unexpected registration, release, legal, inspection or processing fees paid to unrelated third parties can be warning signs. Understand exactly who is charging the fee and why.
Repeated changes to the transaction
Frequent changes to product, destination, buyer identity, payment method or intermediary chain can signal an opportunity that has not been properly organized.
Build a repeatable trade process
Use one controlled set of commercial requirements, verify counterparties at a level appropriate to the transaction, and keep written records of material changes. International trade involves product, logistics, compliance, documentation and payment risk, so platform presence or a single document should never replace independent due diligence.
